In The Cloud Forest is a set of pieces composed in tandem with video of microscopic images that ultimately began via a friendship with biologist Dr. Arnaud Martin.
During the fall of 2015 I received a generous invitation to spend a month in Peru with Martin and a team of researchers from UC Berkeley on a collaborative project with scientists from The French National Center for Scientific Research. They brought me on as an assistant on a field research and collecting trip.
We spent a lot of time together in the field, and I was able to spend time recording as well. Before and after the trip I spent a number of late nights imaging in the lab. Below are several images of butterfly scales taken at that time. We have brainstormed many approaches to a collaboration together, along the way involving others on a film project.
However, In The Cloud Forest has been several years in the making, and is still in the creation and development phase.
In the end my aim is to demonstrate overlaps in complimentary as well as divergent thinking dispositions in the arts and sciences. Working closely over long periods of time with scientists has deepened my curiosity as as artist and my appreciation of the natural world.
